[cc] 00:00:13 April 17th, 1964. For car lovers, the date means only one thing: the debut of the Ford Mustang and the birth of the pony car. Over 22,000 orders were placed that first day and more than a million Mustangs moved out of the showrooms in the first two years. Amazing numbers by any measure. Well, since then, the Mustang has been witness to fascinating automotive history. From the horsepower wars of the '60s to the oil crunches of the '70s, all the while building its own history, as well as a fiercely loyal following. Now, 40 years later, the mark gallops on, stronger than it's been in two and a half decades. That's because the 2005 Mustang is the first clean sheet design for the pony car since 1979, when it moved onto the Fairmount Fox platform and put to bed the none too loved and much-maligned Mustang II. 25 years will show on anyone's face and the Mustang is no exception. So much of the current car is vastly outdated, from the action of the shifter to the shape of the dashboard, to the quality of the materials. Mostly, the car feels plain worn out. The new car brings with it a fresh new look and a tougher, sportier demeanor than we have seen in years, but it nonetheless remains unmistakably a Mustang. To no one's surprise, being that it's Ford, it borrows heavily from the past. You can read the car's history in the scooped-out flanks, the tail lamps with the three vertical elements, the silhouette with the long front and short rear decks and the unmistakable overhanging front lip. The '05 Mustang manages to skillfully blend cues from various iconic models into a thoroughly modern whole. Say what you will about Ford and its obsession with retro design; we certainly have. But with the Mustang, Ford gets it right.
