AARON KUPEC, anchor:

Connecticut officials say 11 newborns have been left at state hospital emergency rooms under the state's Safe Havens law since it took effect almost nine years ago, including two last month alone. The law allows parents unable to care for infants 30 days old or younger to drop them off at the hospital without fear of prosecution for abandonment. Holly and her husband David adopted a Safe Haven baby left by her mother at St. Francis Hospital on Christmas Eve 2007.

Ms. HOLLY DESIMONE (Adoptive Parent): The courage that it took for her to do that, and of course, the knowledge that she had of the Safe Haven law, so you know, I just have tremendous respect and I pray for her every day because I know she gave birth to that child, so she must still--I know she still feels for that child. I just want her to know that if she's out there listening that, you know, her baby is being raised in a wonderful, happy home.

KUPEC: Despite the law, four babies have still been abandoned since it took effect, however, all have survived.

KUPEC: State officials say two more babies were dropped off at Connecticut hospital emergency rooms last month under the state's Safe Havens law, living proof that the law works. More from reporter Mark Sims.

MARK SIMS reporting:

The two March Safe Havens babies were brought to Connecticut Children's Medical Center and to Middlesex Hospital. Under the Safe Havens law, parents unable to care for infants up to 30 days old can bring the babies to hospital emergency rooms, no questions asked. Holly and her husband David adopted Hanna, the Safe Havens baby brought to St. Francis Hospital on Christmas Eve 2007.

Ms. DESIMONE: Her birth mother knew of the existence of the Safe Haven law and gave a little baby girl a chance in a forever loving family. I pray for her every day for her comfort and peace to know that her ultimate sacrifice was the beginning of a new world for many others.
