00:20:37 TZ; Sleep: Most humans spend a third of their lives asleep. I; Matthew Walker, Director of the Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab at the University of California, Berkeley, talks about why we sleep, says you remember better the next day after a night of sleep, talks about doing MRI scans of people with sleep deprivation. Five college students are part of a study conducted by Walker. There is an NIH-funded study at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine. Four paid volunteers get wired up and spend a week and a half in a dimly lit hospital suit. They stay awake till four in the morning and are then awakened at 8 for five nights in a row. V; Subjects in the NIH-funded study at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine. I; David Dinges, In charge of the University of Pennsylvania study, talks about sleep depravation, says each day gets worse, says sleep is a factor in many car accidents, says he thinks that sleep was a factor in the Exxon Valdez, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and the 2003 Staten Island ferry crash, says most do not know they are impaired. I; Hacina, Sleep Study Subject, talks about not having enough sleep. Virginia Tech's Transportation Institute did a study of what causes car crashes. They found driving drowsy was the riskiest behavior of all. V; Video clips from the study. V; Clips of the Exxon Valdez, Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Staten Island ferry crash. Sleep deprived volunteers often have mood swings. Leslie Stahl reporting. 00:33:37 |

00:38:06 TZ; Sleep: In 1960 the American Cancer Society did research that showed most Americans got 8 hours sleep a night. Today that number is 6.7 hours of sleep. Eve Van Cauter, an endocrinologist at the University of Chicago School of Medicine, studies the effect of sleep on the body. I; Eve Van Cauter, University of Chicago, talks about her study where they restricted sleep to four hours a night, says they were in a diabetic state, talks about Leptin, says a lack of deep sleep could be a factor in diabetes, says people should get a good nights sleep. Van Cauter's study found out people are hungrier when they do not get enough sleep due to a hormone called Leptin. I; Jonathan Mrock, Sleep volunteer, talks about how he feels. During the study Dr. Esra Tasali, a colleague of Van Cauter, keeps sending sounds to wake up Mrock and keep him from entering deep sleep. I; Dr. Esra Tasali, Sleep Study, talks about Delta waves. People go through sleep stages, Light sleep, to deep sleep to rem and then over again. The study found that Mrock was hungrier, less alert and his body cannot metabolize sugar after four nights without deep sleep. Scientist Scott McRobert at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia is studying the affects of sleep on sex while studying fruit flies. I; Scott McRobert, St. Joseph's University, talks about the effect of sleep on sex, says sleep deprived flies rarely if ever mate. V; Fruit flies mating. I; David Dinges, University of Pennsylvania, talks about people wanting to do away with sleep. Some research is showing that taking naps help. Leslile Stahl reporting. 00:50:37 |

[CC] 00:59:15 like the mutter, the Condon Medical Museum in Bangkok, Thailand, is also aimed primarily at medical students, though the general public also finds it fascinating. The exhibits at the Condon Museum evoke varied reactions. And it's also generated controversy. Displays, like these cross sections, preserved in clear acrylic, allow medical students on field trips to examine the intricacies of the brain structure in an almost living condition. Here, a human nervous system has been painstakingly teased out of a body, so it can be studied in isolation. These are actual nerve fibers, not replications --an organic parallel to the Mutter's phantom brain. The Condon also has cadavers, carefully dissected, with sections peeled back to reveal tissue layers with a level of detail far exceeding any textbook. Museums that preserve maladies of the past to serve the doctors of the future are what the Mutter helped to inaugurate. And this educational tradition continues today with exhibits like Harry, an example of a rare condition in which soft connective tissue turns to bone, immobilizing the victim. Worden: what makes them important is that, currently, there is some breakthrough research being done at the University of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere, that is focusing on the cause and the possible cure of this disease... 01:02:24 |

00:20:56 ...We all think in Western civilization that we can stay awake to get more done. I think that's simply not true and I think if you have a good place to sleep, what you'll find is that you can get more done than if you simply stay awake. But what if you do sleep - just not enough?
