Cristo Rey is a private Jesuit school for low income kids, and Kearney's book tell's the school's story. V; Cover of More Than a Dream. Studio I; Kearney, says he started a volunteer program at Cristo Rey as well as spending 2 years at the school as a volunteer teacher, coach, and bus driver, the school started in 1996, they wanted to create a private high-quality school in the Pilsen neighborhood, the kids would work at Chicago companies like Madison Dearborn Partners, Mackenzie, KPMG, and Sidley Austin, the payments of those great companies would be used to pay for the expenses of running the school, the Jesuits are well known for work and education, the school has a four day week but longer days and school years, the Jesuits were able to sell the idea to local businesses, the kids are earning their own education, Cristo Rey spent three weeks before the first school year working to prepare the kids for going to the workplace, the work for the kids would vary from basic to highly technical due to maturity and ability, Leo Maldonado was a Cristo Rey student that came in with minimal expectations, Maldonado credits Cristo Rey for where he is today, all Cristo Rey student have been accepted to college, there are 18 Cristo Rey model school nationwide currently, 3 more schools are planned in the fall, Houston and Cincinnati are considering similar school, and the story is very incredible and inspiring.
